Jeff Sayer and Intu Boedhihartono (JCU Cairns) organised a workshop to talk to conservation academics and practitioners about landscape approaches to conservation, using knowledge and case studies from Indonesia, northern Australia and PNG. The workshop was hosted at JCU’s Daintree Rainforest Observatory in Far North Queensland. Attendees came from universities (academics and students from JCU, University of Indonesia, University of Zurich), NGOs (Burung/Birdlife Indonesia, Terrain, Centre for International Forestry Research, Bogor, Indonesia) and local government. It became increasingly apparent that there are many parallels between the regions; despite factors that are specific to each context. Attendees discussed the most important factors in a successful integrated landscape approach to natural resource management; among these, process transparency, good governance, and good base science all came up as essential. The workshop generated much food-for-thought that furthers the thinking on effective landscape conservation.
